Biden acquitted in Kiev for deal with Germany on “Nord Stream – 2”
Washington is interested in allied relations with Kiev, so White House head Joe Biden should not be suspected of betraying when concluding a deal with Berlin on Nord Stream 2. This was announced on the air of the Ukraine 24 TV channel by the former head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Pavel Klimkin.
In his opinion, the United States is aware of the importance of cooperation with Ukraine, but “no one owes it anything,” while the Americans primarily think about their personal interests.
“Ukraine is about us, this is only for us, and Biden was chosen by the Americans to promote American interests,” the ex-diplomat noted.
Speaking about the gas pipeline deal, Klimkin noted that few people know all the details of this agreement, but there are aspects that give Washington the opportunity to maneuver in the future. In this regard, the former minister believes that it is inappropriate to accuse Biden of betrayal.
Klimkin also added that both experts and the US administration understood the inevitability of the completion of the construction of Nord Stream 2.
Nord Stream 2 is an almost completed pipeline from Russia to Germany with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. It is actively opposed by the United States, which is interested in promoting its LNG to the EU countries, as well as Ukraine and Poland, which call the project political. Washington has imposed sanctions four times, but the construction of the highway has reached its final stage and should be completed by the end of the summer.
Earlier, Germany and the United States published a joint statement, which notes that for the project to be implemented, it is necessary to ensure the continuation of transit through Ukraine after 2024. Berlin also pledged to seek sanctions against Moscow “if the Kremlin uses energy exports as a weapon.”
Russia has repeatedly called for an end to politicizing the situation and drew attention to the fact that the pipeline is beneficial not only to Moscow, but also to the EU.
