Rizzo?
Sounds like the Yankees are really overhauling things with Anthony Rizzo headed to New York for two prospects. There’s a lot to like about Rizzo. He’s a great glove, a lefty bat, can hit for power and draw a walk. With the addition of Gallo, the Yankees now have two legitimate lefty bats to diversify their lineup.
But, this creates a logjam in the infield and Rizzo is a pure rental. The Yankees now have Urshela, Torres, LeMahieu, Odor, Rizzo, and Voit to play four spots. I assume they are going to ship Voit out of town, but that means you lose out on a high-performance player under team control for three more years. Maybe that brings you back some prospects or talent to upgrade the pitching, but I’m not sure if this is the time to trade Voit considering the injury disaster he has been this year.
And the Yankees dipped further into their prospect pool. They stayed away from their top names, but they are shedding depth and doing it to stay under the luxury tax. That’s my biggest complaint about all of these moves, the Yankees are getting money from the other team so they can avoid going over the luxury tax. For a team that is worth billions of dollars and charges the prices that they do, that’s insulting to every fan. Don’t get me wrong, Rizzo is a nice add, but can the Yankees stop acting like they are cash-strapped?
