Spa Paddock Repairs Underway
We’ll have details in the coming days of a number of initiatives to support the victims of the disastrous flooding that affected parts of Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium and has left dozens dead, many more still missing and thousands homeless.
The Nürburgring’s infrastructure is currently in use as a disaster relief centre with massive levels of donations of food and clothing arriving and being processed for onward distribution.
Spa Francorchamps meanwhile was also in the flooding zone and, for the second time in recent weeks, suffered damage with the main freight access road destroyed (above) and serious damage caused too to the lower paddock, already compromised in the earlier flooding and with work already underway to reconfigure the hard standing after demolition of the previous overhang and undercroft.
There were fears that the repairs to the paddock would put the 2021 Spa 24 Hours in debt, but as can be seen from these pictures taken yesterday by DSC’s David Lord, on site with the British GT Championship, who race there this weekend, based out of the upper, F1 pitlane, repairs are already underway with surface preparation and resurfacing proceeding apace
The main paddock access tunnel, blocked by debris after the deluge, already cleared.
Sadly the news is not as good around the infamous and much loathed ‘Stairs of Death from the upper to the middle paddock, they remain completely undamaged and will remain in their role as a risk to life and limb!
