Former UFC referee Big John McCarthy doubts Conor McGregor’s theory ‘titanium shin bone’ will make him stronger
BIG JOHN McCARTHY cast doubt that Conor McGregor’s ‘titanium shin bone’ theory will make him stronger.
McGregor was forced to go under the knife after breaking his tibia seconds before the end of round one in his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier.

McGregor, 33, told fans on Instagram: “I needed to get treatment on my leg and my ankle.
“And I needed to get treatment on the shinbone and I would have never committed to going under the knife unless something like this has happened.
“What I needed was a titanium shin bone so now I have a titanium rod going down from the knee to the ankle and the doctor says it is unbreakable.
“First of all I have to manage the incision and make sure it doesn’t get infected and keep the health on it and get it back that way.
“Then I’ll start playing with the balance and learning how to stand on it again, learning to stand on the single leg again.
“Then I’ll build the strength and then I’ll have an unbreakable titanium leg. What a story it’s going to be.”
But legendary ref McCarthy, who retired from officiating in 2018, was left unconvinced by McGregor.

He said on his podcast: “[McGregor] talked about how he’s got a titanium rod in his leg.
“He goes, ‘I have a titanium leg. Now when I kick people, now watch what happens.’
“Oh, I’m gonna watch what happens because I guarantee you, it’s gonna hurt you a whole lot more than it hurts them.
“There’s no flexibility either on your foot. In your ankle, there’s no flexibility because those screws and that plate don’t move.
“They f***ing hold it. So when you think your foot is gonna flex or that bone is gonna bend at all, it doesn’t do it anymore.
“The titanium rod keeps it there.”
McGregor will spend the next six weeks on crutches while serving a six-month medical suspension.
And despite calling for a FOURTH fight with Poirier, UFC president Dana White predicted the Irishman will be out for a year.
