GT Open Hungaroring Race 2 – Mid-Race Rain Shuffles The Pack
It was a crazy Race 2 at the Hungaroring as a summer storm right after the pit stops reshuffled the cards and brought unexpected results.
Eventually, Loris Spinelli and Gianluca Giraudi, after their good show in Race 1, were rewarded with a deserved maiden win. The Mercedes of San Marino’s AKM Motorsport, which also took Pro-Am glory, beat the Inception Racing McLaren of Brendan Iribe and Ollie Millroy and the VSR Lamborghini of Frederick Schandorff-Michele Beretta, who added 2 points to their championship lead, finishing right ahead of their top rival, the Lechner Racing Porsche of Andy Soucek, here exceptionally paired with Ben Barker.
Giuseppe Cipriani took his third success of the season in the Am class.
Christian Klien posted a brilliant pole with the JP Motorsport McLaren, beating Basz (Olimp Mercedes) by a mere 0.022 sec. The Pole took a slight advantage at the start, with Klien challenged on the other side by Barker.
At the end of the first lap, Basz was in the led ahead of Klien, Barker, Foley, Beretta, Seyffert, Iribe, and the first two in Am, Korzeniowski and Antonelli. Gaps were minimal in the first 10 laps, with the first five covered by just 6 seconds.
The window for driver changes opened on lap 14, with Iribe, Moller and Giraudi being the first ones to stop. The leaders, Basz and Klien, followed on lap 19. As they came out, the rain started to fall heavily, with Marcin Jedlinski spinning and stopping for wets, followed by Krupinski and then all the others. Stanislaw Jedlinski also spun and hit the wall, followed soon after by Antonelli, which prompted the safety-car.
In the lead was Spinelli, ahead of Schandorff, Soucek, Millroy, Krupinski, Dinan and Tweraser.
At the restart, on lap 27, Spinelli and Schandorff flew away, while Soucek with the Porsche seemed in trouble and would be passed by Millroy. Magdzierz and Krupinski collided at the first corner, both spinning.
The fight for the win ended when both VSR Lamborghinis received 10-second penalties for not serving the entire handicap during their pit stops, which dropped Schandorff to third behind Ollie Millroy, who took second overall and a Pro-Am win after having passed Soucek, who finished fourth ahead of Dinan and Paverud, third in Pro-Am. Cipriani won again in Am ahead of Antonelli and Díaz-Varela.
