Extra Butter and Adidas’ Happy Gilmore Collection May Be the Best Collab of the Year
Never have I felt older than when I realized 2021 marks the 25-year-anniversary of Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore. The golf comedy is an essential entry in the millennial comedy canon and remains among Sandler’s best work. To celebrate, NYC’s Extra Butter has partnered with Adidas for a special collaboration that’s got something for both golfers and non-golfers alike.
The crossover between Extra Butter and Adidas may seem odd at first, but it’s less strange when you realize there’s been more of a push from fashion brands to get into the golfing space over the last few years. And what is Happy Gilmore, if not an underdog story of an unlikely player making a splash in what’s historically been an old, white man’s sport? There’s more crossover than you’d imagine, and the collection takes full advantage of that, with something for everyone in the form of offerings focused around three of the comedy’s finest characters — Happy, his coach Chubbs and his rival Shooter McGavin.

True to his nature as a fun-loving guy, the parts of the Happy collection are designed to take you from the links to drinks in no time flat thanks to a handful of comfy pieces, including an Adilette Boost Slide that features a felt footbed inspired by the lush grass of a golf green. Happy’s pieces also include cozy sweats and even a cooler bag to keep your favorite sixer ice cold.

When it comes to Chubbs, the pieces are what you’d expect from a “traditional” golfer getup; the polos, pleated tech pants, and shorts are decked out with a pastel and argyle treatment. Some of Adidas’ tech, like PRIMEKNIT and WARPKNIT, is used to give the pieces a lightweight and comfortable stretch so you can swing freely without your clothing getting in the way. However, the star of Cubbbs’ collection is the ZG21 spiked golf shoe, which gets an all-white treatment combined with a brogue paneling as a throwback to golfing days of yore. Look close enough, too, and you’ll notice a nod to the gator that got the best of ole Chubbs.

A man as extra as Shooter McGavin deserves clothes that are equally as bold. Fortunately, Extra Butter understands that and has designed pieces accordingly. The golfer finally gets his treasured golden jacket with the Adicross Bomber Jacket that features an Extra Butter crest and three stripe detailing. The other standout includes an all-gold Ultraboost crafted with golden PRIMEKNITE hues, suede notes, and a play on the golfer’s iconic hand gesture. Oh, and you can tuck golf tees behind the three stripe cage. Plus, actor Christopher McDonald showed up to model Shooter’s pieces in the official lookbook.

Collaborations can be hit or miss, but that’s certainly not the case here. Extra Butter and Adidas clearly, carefully, and thoughtfully considered each portion of the collection, making something worth celebrating. Hell, we’d go so far as to say it’s basically a hole-in-one.
