The final supermoon of 2021 lights up the night skies Thursday, and it will put on a show for stargazers.
The traditional name is the strawberry moon because June is the when the fruit is harvested in the northeastern United States, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. The strawberry moon also happens to be a supermoon, which means that the heavenly body hits its perigee in time with the phase.
There were three supermoons this year. One happened April 27 and another occurred May 26. The latter was extra special because it coincided with a lunar eclipse. That’s a rare occurrence. With June 24 being the final supermoon of 2021, viewers will have to wait almost a year to see another one.
The next supermoon will be June 14, 2022.
