NBC is refusing to air the 2022 Golden Globe Awards and calling for the HFPA to reform
NBC said on Monday that it would not air the 2022 Golden Globes and called for reforms in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
"We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform," NBC said in a statement. "However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023."
The HFPA, which hands out the Golden Globes, has faced scrutiny since a story in the Los Angeles Times in February highlighted questionable financial practices and a lack of diversity in its membership.
The HFPA in March laid out a framework for how it would improve. But with recent announcements that major Hollywood studios like Netflix, Amazon Studios, and WarnerMedia would boycott the Globes and HFPA events, it was evident that the next shoe to drop would be NBC cutting ties.
Before this year's Globes broadcast, which had a giant decline in ratings, the organization caught heat for its snub of the hit show "I May Destroy You" and for reports that the producers of Netflix's "Emily in Paris" had flown members out for a lavish set visit. "Emily in Paris" scored two Globes nominations this year.
