NHL Betting Guide for April 19th

The NHL schedule makers did us all a favor by scheduling eight games on a Monday. It’s a balanced schedule with games starting across all four time zones. All eight NHL Central Division teams are in action, and four from each of the West and North Divisions. We’ve highlighted North Division and Central Division matchups in today’s betting guide.

Nashville Predators vs. Chicago Blackhawks News, Analysis, and Picks

The Nashville Predators will try to stop a two-game losing streak when they host the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night. The problem is, however, that they are competing against the Blackhawks and regression.

Nashville went on a 16-game tear in which they went 13-3-0, but their metrics across all strengths were much less dominant. The Preds put up an expected goals-for percentage below 50.0% in 10 of the 16 games, meaning they were outplayed but still winning games. Their PDO during the 16 game span was 1.060, bringing their season-long average above the 1.000 mark. Unsurprisingly, it’s started to fall back down over the last couple of games, dropping to .943, which is where we should expect it to stay, while the Preds’ metrics balance out.

Chicago is having some puck-luck over their recent sample of games. The Hawks have scored four goals in four of their last six games, thanks in part to creating more chances offensively. Chicago has put up above-average scoring chances in four of six and is averaging 27.3 chances per game over that span. High-danger opportunities have also increased, with the Hawks going north of mean in three of six.

The Hawks’ offense should dictate the pace and force the Preds to keep up. Chicago outpaced the Preds in expected goals-for in two of their last three matchups but has lost all three games. We’re betting on that trend to reverse tonight and are taking the Hawks on the moneyline.

The Bet: Blackhawks +128

Spread: Oilers -1.5 (+180), Canadiens +1.5 (-225)

Total: o5.5 -134

Edmonton Oilers vs. Montreal Canadiens News, Analysis, and Picks

The Montreal Canadiens defensive structure changed under the new coaching regime, and not for the better. Worse yet, the Habs have been on an awful trend over their last seven games.

Montreal is giving up an alarming amount of high-danger chances under Dominique Ducharme, and that number has spiked over their recent sample. Opponents have attempted 12.7 chances from high-danger areas over Montreal’s last seven games, with every opponent hitting double digits. This has resulted in more high-danger goals against, with 13 of the 23 goals coming off high-danger opportunities. Those metrics have contributed to the Habs posting an expected goals-for percentage below 50.0% in five of their last seven, a span in which they have won only two of those games.

Last week, the Edmonton Oilers had their games against the Vancouver Canucks postponed, and they appear to have benefitted from the layoff. Before their seven-day hiatus, the Oilers had attempted nine or fewer high-danger attempts in nine of 11 games. In their first game back, they were up to 18 such attempts. Granted, that effort did come against the defensively inept Jets, but the Habs have been on the same defensive plane as the Jets since their coaching change.

The Oilers have mastered putting Connor McDavid in opportune spots, particularly on home ice. McDavid gets 73.4% of his zone starts in the offensive zone at home and has a 72.6% expected goals-for percentage. He should parlay that into increased output against the Habs, who struggle to limit opponents’ chances in their own end. Don’t be surprised if McDavid has another big game.

Edmonton’s offensive production is going to keep Montreal pinned down tonight. We’re riding the Oilers’ momentum off a big win as short home favorites against the struggling Habs.

The Bet: Oilers moneyline -134
