Pens Points: Missed Opportunity

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres
Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

Penguins fall to Sabres for first time and fail to move one step closer to division lead. No worries, Pens Points is here to help you get over the loss and ready for a new week.

When the puck dropped in their game against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Penguins knew that a victory pulled them within a single point of the division lead with a game in hand. Unfortunately, the Penguins turned in one of their worst performances of the season, falling to the lowly Sabres by a score of 4-2 in a game where they looked more interested in being anywhere by the ice. Monday says hello with a new Pens Points in tow...

After sitting in third place in the Eastern Division for what felt like forever, the Penguins overtook the New York Islanders for second after their victory on Saturday. That stay in second place was short lived after Sunday’s results. [Pensburgh]

With all the injuries the Penguins have undergone this season, one of their most important players has turned out to be Evan Rodrigues. Filling in wherever needed, Rodrigues has played a vital role in the Penguins success. [Pensburgh]

April has treated the Penguins relatively well for the most part, but one part of their game is still struggling in a major way. Sitting near the bottom of the league, the penalty kill just can’t seem to find the right makeup to be successful. [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]

Things did not improve for the Penguins penalty kill on Sunday against the Sabres as they surrendered yet another goal down a man in the loss. Adding insult to injury, it turned out to be the game winner when everything was said and done. [Trib Live]

Jason Zucker has been a welcome addition to the Penguins lineup since returning from injury a few weeks ago, but his performance Sunday is one he will try and forget. Zucker did record a goal, but too many other mistakes left scoring chances on the table. [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]

When the Penguins and Sabres met on Saturday afternoon, it marked the first time two teams co-hosted a “Pride Game” in the NHL. Both sides wore special warm up jerseys that are being auctioned off to support local causes. [Penguins]

News and notes from around the NHL...

On Saturday, Patrick Marleau tied Gordie Howe for the most games played in NHL history at 1,767 games. Marleau is set to break the record on Monday night when the San Jose Sharks take on the Vegas Golden Knights. [NHL]

When the Vancouver Canucks returned to game action last night for the first time in three weeks, they were still missing more than a handful of players. Head coach Travis Green stated that between eight or nine line regulars were still out of action. [ESPN]
