UK records 10 Covid deaths as people enjoy new lockdown freedoms
The UK recorded 10 deaths of people with coronavirus on Sunday – one of the country’s lowest daily totals since September.
Another 1,882 new Covid-19 cases were also reported, as the emergence from lockdown continues.
The latest figures mean that the UK has now seen a total of 127,270 deaths and 4,387,820 confirmed infections since the pandemic began. Last Sunday saw just seven deaths reported but 10 remains one of the lowest totals since early September.
Figures released at the weekend tend to be lower because of a lag in reporting.
Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have been 151,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
It comes amid growing concern about the possibility of dangerous variants entering the UK from abroad – with particular fears over a ‘double mutant’ strain from India, which is not on the UK’s red list.
Meanwhile, the rapid rollout of vaccines continues, with the number of second doses being administered each day now significantly outpacing first jabs.
Just under 140,000 first doses were recorded in the last 24 hour period, compared to a second day of almost 500,000 second doses.
That means a total of 32.8 million people have had a first jab, with 9.9 million of those having had a second jab too.
Earlier on Sunday, NHS England said a further nine deaths had been confirmed in the country’s hospitals over six dates.
Scotland confirmed that it had seen no new deaths and just 211 new cases.
It brings the country’s respective totals to 7,640 deaths and 223,261 cases.
There have been a further 94 confirmed infections in Wales, taking the total number of confirmed cases since the crisis began to 210,823.
Public Health Wales said there were three further deaths, meaning 5,538 fatalities have now been recorded in the country.
82 further cases were confirmed in Northern Ireland the Department of Health said. A total of 119,032 infections have been confirmed there.
There were no further deaths reported, meaning the total death toll linked to the virus remains at 2,135.
Across the UK, the gradual relaxation of lockdown is continuing, with 5,000 set to attend a gig with no social distancing in just two weeks.
