Milwaukee Bucks vs. Portland Trail Blazers News and Notes
A fantastic late game on Friday night goes down in front of a national television audience as the Bucks visit the surging Trail Blazers. Portland has reeled off four-straight wins but hasn’t made up any ground in the Northwest Division. That’s because the two teams ahead of them, both Denver and Utah, keep winning too. The Nuggets have won four straight and are 8-2 in their past ten, while the Jazz has reeled off seven in a row. Still, the Blazers are locked into a guaranteed playoff series spot in sixth, 3.5 games up on the Maverick and just a half-game back of Denver and the Lakers.
While Portland has played very well, it should be noted they haven’t exactly gotten by world beaters during this streak. Three of the teams the Blazers got by in the streak having winning percentages of .375 or lower in the Pistons, Magic, and Raptors, while the Heat are just one game above .500. That being said, all these wins came on the road, including Wednesday’s victory in Detroit.
Portland was powered as usual by Damian Lillard, who put up a game-high 33 in the Blazers’ 124-101 dominant win. CJ McCollum chipped in with 24 and is really rounding into form after missing two months with a broken foot. McCollum, who came back in mid-March, has spouted off for 26 a game in his past four after struggling in the teens in his first few games back. Newly acquired Norm Powell put up 14 in nearly 34 minutes, and Jusuf Nurkic, who was playing just his third game since being out two and a half months with a broken wrist, is starting to increase his playing time, seeing 20 minutes of court time for the first time since before the injury. The Blazers seem to be putting it all together at the perfect time and could be scary come playoff time.
Milwaukee has been scary for four years, and there’s no one scarier than a freak. The Greek Freak continues to lead the Bucks as Giannis Antetokounmpo is having yet another MVP type season. There hasn’t been much talk around the defending back-to-back most valuable player going for a three-peat, but with earlier favorites Joel Embiid and LeBron James out with injury and the way Giannis is playing, he certainly deserves to be in the conversation.
Antetokounmpo showed his skills to the LeBron-less Lakers in LA on Wednesday, putting up 25 points, ten rebounds, and three blocks in a dominant 112-97 Bucks victory. Jrue Holiday had a game-high 28 for Milwaukee, while Khris Middleton added 17 points and eight assists. It was a much-needed performance as the Bucks stopped a three-game losing skid with the victory over LA. They’ve still won seven of their past ten and hold down the top-spot in the Central Division while the NBA’s highest-scoring team sits third in the East.
Milwaukee has dominated their recent meetings with the Blazers and is looking for their fifth straight win and ninth of ten against Portland. Most recently, the Bucks pounded Portland 134-106 on February 1 in their only meeting of the season in Milwaukee. Milwaukee has won the past four matchups by an average of 25 points, including a 143-100 beat down early in the 2018-19 season.
The Bucks haven’t covered in a game following a cover in their past five attempts, while Portland has covered three of their past four games. Milwaukee has gone over in five of seven while the Blazers have gone above the number in four straight. The Bucks have covered in seven of nine in Portland and are 14-4-1 against the spread in their past 19 head-to-head meetings with the Blazers.
