[Softball] Softball Falcons Run Winning Streak to Seven Games with Two Wins at Friends Invitational
WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons won in two distinct fashions in the opening day of their Invitational, but won nonetheless to extend their winning streak to seven games.
The Falcons started the day with a walkoff, extra inning victory over the Doane College Tigers.
Doane got on the board with a run in each of the first two innings before Kat Davis (JR/Keller, Texas) delivered an RBI double to score Meghan Low (JR/Collinsville, Okla.) in the bottom of the third.
It was again Davis involved in the fifth when the Falcons managed to tie the score. She singled and then came home with the tying run on a double by Jennifer Garcia (FR/Sylamar, Calif. ).
Things stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth when Garcia, the current KCAC Hitter of the Week, doubled that led to pinch runner Tatum Haney (SO/Derby, Kan. ) scoring the game-winning run on an RBI single from Kaylen Lassley (SR/Salina, Kan. ).
The Falcons got two hits apiece in the win over Doane from Davis, Garcia, Lassley and Carolyn Dallimore (SO/Patterson, Calif. ).
After giving up the two runs in the first two frames, Hali Walters (SR/Longmont, Colo.) settled in for the Falcons and got the win with a complete game effort over eight innings. She struck out seven batters and walked four.
Angelina Esqueda and Kayla Miller each had three hits for the Broncos.
Friends then routed the Dakota State University Trojans 17-3, exploding for 14 runs that turned a one-run deficit into an unbelievable 13-run cushion.
Davis was once more at the heart of the offensive fireworks, leading off with a double and then scoring on a double by Garcia before smashing a three-run homer later in the inning.
Lassley then singled home a run, while Low had a pair of RBI singles, including a two-run base hit that plated Lacee Travens (SO/Reno, Nev. ) and Vanessa Sigala (FR/Carson, Calif. ) to put a cap on the huge inning.
Following a two-run single by Vinitzia Blanco that finished a three-run first inning for the Trojans, an infield single by Dallimore brought home Aleigha Gale (FR/Winfield, Kan. ) for the Falcons' second run of the bottom of the frame.
Low went 3-of-4 at the plate in the second game for the Falcons, while Davis and Garcia each had a pair of hits.
Michelle Kroell (SO/Clovis, Calif. ) started for the Falcons and lasted four innings, allowing three runs with one strikeout and four walks. Ashlyn Jacobs (SR/Valley Center, Kan. ) then pitched a scoreless fifth inning to finish off the big win for the Falcons.
The Falcons will play three games tomorrow (Mar. 6) at the Invitational, starting with a 10 am matchup vs. Briar Cliff University. Friends will then face Peru State College at 2 pm and the University of Jamestown at 4 pm.
