Washington Football Team Officially Releases Quarterback Alex Smith
After reports earlier in the week that the Washington Football Team would part ways with quarterback Alex Smith, the team made it official on Friday morning by informing him of his release.
Smith’s time in Washington came to an end following his miraculous return to the football field after a right leg compound fracture of his tibia and fibula during the 2018 season. He had to undergo multiple operations, including complications from an infection in their leg that almost required amputation. Some surgeons viewed the trauma to his leg as something akin to a soldier wounded by explosives on a battlefield. And yet, he made his improbable return two years later. First as a backup, and then as a starter who went 5-1 while leading Washington to a playoff berth.
His comeback and efforts propelled him to win the 2020 AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
Following the season, Smith reiterated on multiple occasions that he wanted to continue his career. The former number one overall pick has a wealth of experience from his 14 seasons in the league. He would serve as a great mentor for any young quarterback in the league, just as he did in his final year in Kansas City before turning the reins over to Patrick Mahomes.
By cutting him, Washington will save $14.7 million on the salary cap. Washington is currently listed at +300 on FanDuel Sportsbook to win the NFC East.
