What another surgery means for Weston Richburg’s 49ers tenure
Center Weston Richburg’s future with the 49ers looks increasingly dim.
Richburg recently underwent hip surgery, according to the NFL Network. He hasn’t suited up for the 49ers since sustaining a knee injury in December 2019 at New Orleans, and his 2020 comeback got further derailed by shoulder surgery.
Richburg is due a $7.85 million salary in 2021, and releasing him could save the 49ers some $4.5 million in salary-cap space.
Prior to his injuries and subsequent surgeries, Richburg had played well and started 18 of 19 games upon arriving via 2017 free agency on a pricey deal (five years, $47.5 million).
The 49ers scrambled to find capable centers last season. Ben Garland, Daniel Brunskill and Hroniss Grasu all started at the position while the 49ers posted a 6-10 record.
Centers slated for free agency include Corey Linsley (Green Bay Packers) and Alex Mack (Atlanta Falcons).
