Sports briefs: Marin Catholic ranked in top five in preseason NCS football rankings
Marin Catholic is the No. 4 team in the North Coast Section in MaxPreps’ Top 25 preseason football ranking released on Monday.
The Wildcats are ranked behind only De La Salle, Pittsburg and Clayton Valley Charter. Cardinal Newman rounds out the top five.
“With talented second-year starting QB, junior Michael Ingrassia adding strength and size to go along with section’s top running back returning in Matteo Perez (2,024 yards rushing, 30 touchdowns) and San Jose State-bound lineman Kai Peterson-Davison, the Wildcats are loaded,” the report read.
Women’s golf
Sophomore Claire Shubin shot a 1-under 71 to give the Dominican women’s golf team a four-shot lead after the first round of the Pioneer Shootout at Corica Park on Monday.
Shubin is just the second Penguin to shoot a round under par. The other was Sophia Schiavione, who shot a 1-under 71 in 2015.
As a team, Dominican shot a 17-over 305 for the day and leads the seven-team field heading into the second and final round on Tuesday. Biola and Academy of Art were tied for second at 21-under 309.
The 305 by the Penguins was their third straight round of scores in the low-300s. Emily Lichty was tied for fifth with a 5-over 77 and Lauren Parayno was tied for eighth at 6-over 78.
Shubin shot even par on the front nine then bogeyed No. 10 before birdying No. 13 and No. 17 to finish her round. She’s the only player under par for the tournament and holds a one-stroke lead over Sami Penor of Biola.
Girls tennis
Alex Eisler and Ashley McKinnon clinched victory for Marin Academy against The Bay School with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles on Monday.
Shaleez Razavi capped the 5-0 win with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory at No. 2 singles.
