3 adults killed, 2 children injured in crash near Hillsboro
HILLSBORO, Kan. (KSNW) — Three people died in a nearly head-on crash Friday near Hillsboro.
It happened around noon, approximately one mile east of Hillsboro on U.S. 56, and involved two vehicles.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says a pickup towing a trailer with 20 greyhounds was headed west. Another vehicle, possibly an SUV or minivan, was headed east.
“For an unknown reason, one vehicle went left of center causing nearly a head-on crash resulting in the multiple fatalities,” said Trooper Ben Gardner, KHP.
One vehicle caught fire.
The 2 adults in the pickup and the man driving the other vehicle died at the scene. Two young children in the man’s vehicle have serious injuries and were taken to a Wichita hospital.
Three of the greyhounds also died, the rest scattered.
Gardner said the victims are from that area of Kansas, not people traveling from out of state.
The highway will be closed until at least 6 p.m. as the KHP critical highway accident response team investigates. Traffic in the area is being re-routed.
