Portland Trail Blazers vs. Los Angeles Lakers News and Notes
The Los Angeles Lakers are going through their first stretch of adversity of this 2021 season. LA is mired in a season-long four-game losing streak and has dropped five of six since losing Anthony Davis to a calf injury. They’ll have to figure something out because their talented center is out for at least another three weeks.
It appears LeBron James may be getting back some help, though. Dennis Schroder may be activated from the league’s COVID-protocol list as he’s cleared his quarantine. The starting point guard has been absent for all four losses of their winless slide. Schroder, the team’s third-leading scorer (14.2) and number two man in assists (4.3), will be a welcomed addition to an offense that’s been held under 100 points in three of their past four games. Even James has been affected by the lack of talent on offense of late, being held to a pair of 19-point games during the losing streak, although he also put up a couple of 30-plus point performances.
Portland will look to get back on track and take advantage of a struggling LA team to sort out their own issues. The Trail Blazers have dropped three-straight after a season-best six-game win streak and taking nine of 11. The Blazers are coming off a disappointing home-court loss to the lowly Wizards on Saturday, followed by losses in back-to-back days on Monday and Tuesday, getting blown out by the Suns and dropping a five-point game in Denver.
Damian Lillard can relate to LeBron’s roster issues as he’s been playing with starters and major contributors CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic for a month and a half. Lillard has been playing out of his mind climbing to the number three highest scorer in the league. Dame has averaged nearly 32 a game with his pair of teammates on the shelf, raising his season mark to almost 30 points per game. Gary Trent Jr. has stepped up nicely since being inserted into the starting lineup for McCollum, putting up 19 per game. Enes Kanter has also played well, averaging a double-double of 12.7 points and 12.9 rebounds starting for Nurkic.
The under has been the play in 11 of 13 in LA, where Portland has covered 22 of their past 30 trips against the Lakers. LeBron’s squad has failed to cover in their past four overall, while the Blazers are 6-1 against the spread in their past seven as an underdog. The over has come through in eight of nine games Portland was an underdog, and in seven of eight, they were a road dog.
