Charlotte Hornets vs. Golden State Warriors Predictions and Picks
I absolutely love this spot for the under in this game. The perception of the Warriors is that they’re an offensive team first. Well, the band of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant have all but disbanded. Durant has moved on to the Brooklyn Nets, and Klay Thompson is out for the season. Yet the Warriors are still three games above .500 (18-15) and seeded seventh in the Western Conference.
How have they been able to remain a fixture in the playoff conversation?
The Warriors have taken a much more defensive-minded approach in their games this season. It might come as a surprise, but they’re fourth in defensive efficiency, allowing 1.057 points per possession. Their center James Wiseman is now back with the team after being sidelined with a wrist injury. I like how the Warriors are utilizing Wiseman in that he isn’t being asked to score the basketball. Instead, he can focus on his defense and continue to serve as their rim protector inside the paint.
For all the dominant seasons that the Warriors have had under Steve Kerr, this season might be his best coaching performance to date. He’s completely transformed this Warriors team, and I think he has a clear upper hand in putting together a gameplan to thwart the Hornets — beginning by containing LaMelo Ball.
In their earlier matchup, Ball played almost 32 minutes but finished with just seven points. The Warriors narrowly lost the game despite having a two-point lead with nine seconds left in the game. Draymond Green picked up two quick technicals giving the Hornets two free throws and possession of the basketball, which ultimately led to a Terry Rozer buzzer-beater. Keep in mind that Steph Curry was a late scratch in the game during warmups.
With Wiseman and Curry back in the mix, this is a classic revenge angle for the Warriors.
My model projects Golden State to win this game by five points, with the total coming in at 225.8 points.
The Pick: Under 232
