He was praised on social media as “Alex’s Last Great Champion” and was looking forward to competing in the show’s Tournament of Champions.
But the champion died unexpectedly on the morning of February 5, 2021 in LAs Vegas at the age of 24.
His mother, Debbie Smith, paid troibute to her son on Twitter.
She wrote: “We are heartbroken to share that our dear Brayden Smith recently passed away unexpectedly. We are so grateful that Brayden was able to live out his dream on jeopardy.”
In a separate tweet she said: “The outpouring of love for Brayden is overwhelming,” she wrote.
“We can’t express how much your beautiful comments are comforting us during this painfully sad time. Thank you.”

It has since been stated by the Las Vegas Journal Review that his passing followed complications from surgery, after he was hospitalized for days.
According to TMZ, who quoted a family member, Brayden had suffered a medical emergency, and died of natural causes.

Before former host’s Alex Trebek’s death, Smith had won a five-game streak that netted him over $115,000.
Smith graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in economics in 2020.
