Houthis Announce New Attacks On King Khalid Air Base, Abha Airport In Southern Saudi Arabia

The Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced on February 12 that they had carried out new attacks on King Khalid Air Base and Abha International Airport in the southern Saudi province of ‘Asir.

In a statement, Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari, a spokesman for the Houthis, said that three Qasef-2K suicide drones targeted the King Khalid Air Base and Abha International Airport over the last few hours.

The Qasef-2k is an upgraded variant of the Qasef-1 drone, which is a copy of the Iranian Ababil-2. The suicide drone is armed with a heavy high-explosive fragmentation, HE-FRAG, warhead that explodes 20 m above the target.

“The attacks were carried out in response to the aggressor’s [Saudi-led coalition] escalation and its complete siege on our country [Yemen],” the spokesman said.

The Saudi-led coalition has not commented on the Houthis’ announcement, yet. In most cases, this means that the attacks were successful.

On February 10, the Houthis targeted Abha International Airport with four drones. At least two of the drones hit the airport. An airliner was damaged. On February 11, the Yemeni group fired a ballistic missile at King Khalid Air Base. The missile was allegedly intercepted.

The Houthis announced their new attacks on Saudi Arabia only minutes after a US decision to end their designation as a terrorist organization.

The terrorist designation of the Houthis, which was ordered by former President Donald Trump, was revoked by the State Department. Nevertheless, the group’s leaders, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, Abd al-Khaliq Badr al-Din al-Houthi, and Abdullah Yahya al-Hakim, were kept under sanctions.

Despite the recent military escalation and political pressure from the US, Saudi Arabia has not yet taken any steps to end its war on Yemen.
