[Men's Soccer] Own Goal, Penalty Kick Give Men's Soccer a 2-0 Win Over Providence Christian
TEMECULA, Calif. -- It took 76 minutes for the first goal in the men's soccer game against Providence Christian. No one from SDCC was credited with the goal as the Hawks were beneficiaries of an own goal from the Sea Beggars. Four minutes later the Hawks put the game away with a successful penalty kick from Jesus Garcia in the 80th.
SDCC improves to 2-1 on the season with their second-straight win. PCC falls for the first time this season to even their record at 1-1.
The scoreless first half wasn't for lack of trying. The Hawks attempted 10 shots and had four corner kicks. All 10 shots found the frame but the PCC goalie preserved the scoreless first half. Kieran Chance's header with 17 seconds left was the last chance SDCC had in the first 45.
In the first five minutes, the Hawks poured on the pressure and were awarded five corner kicks. None were successful and the score was still 0-0.
In the 76th minute, the Hawks were awarded with another corner kick. The attempt was foiled and cleared momentarily by the Sea Beggars but Gael Ruiz intercepted a pass, sent it forward into the box. This time the PCC defender didn't clear it properly and the ball went into the back of the net for an own goal and a 1-0 lead for SDCC.
Chance was looking to give SDCC a 2-0 advantage as he dribbled in the box. He was then clipped by the Sea Beggar defense and the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick. Garcia stepped up and put the ball in the back of the net for his second penalty kick goal in the last two games.
SDCC faced little pressure in the ast 10 minutes to preserve the shutout. Carter Orchulli earned the shutout victory with five saves.
The Hawks will travel to La Sierra on Monday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
