Arsenal loanee’s agent confirms Jan transfer decision amid Edu ‘concern’
Lucas Torreira’s agent has confirmed that the Arsenal midfielder will continue with his loan spell at Atletico Madrid this month.
Atletico have enjoyed impressive form this season and sit top of LaLiga with two games in hand. What’s more, they have only conceded six goals in 16 games and already have a four-point lead.
However, Torreira – who joined from Arsenal in October – has struggled to play a key role in the team.
The 24-year-old has played seven times in LaLiga but his contributions only amount to 208 minutes. Indeed, he has only managed two starts in the Spanish top flight.
As such, Arsenal chief Edu admitted recently that he is following Torreira’s progress closely. The Gunners’ technical director feels concerned for the player’s match action and welfare in Madrid.
Speaking to FCInter1908 (via Sport Witness), however, Torreira’s agent Pablo Bentancur dismissed the prospect of a move in January – either back to Arsenal or to somewhere else.
Indeed, he was interviewed by an Italian source amid links with Inter. However, he added that he has received “no calls” or contact from the Serie A giants.
Bentancur also said that his client feels “very well” in Madrid.
Torreira’s only two starts in LaLiga under Diego Simeone came in the first month following his departure from London.
Since then, though, he has struggled for minutes, although contracting coronavirus hampered his progress.
The midfielder made way from Arsenal just as Thomas Partey arrived from Atletico in another piece of business between the clubs. As such, it remains unclear where his future will lie at the end of the season.
Smith Rowe in line for new deal
Meanwhile, reports elsewhere claim that Emile Smith Rowe is in line for a bumper new contract at Arsenal.
The 20-year-old has proved a catalyst for solving the Gunners’ recent creativity problems. His last five starts have brought three assists but, more crucially, an upturn in form for the club.
Therefore, reports claim that Arsenal want to reward his efforts.
