Penguins edge Capitals for first win
Jake Guentzel scored the only goal of the shootout in the fourth round Sunday as the Penguins picked up their first win of the season, a 4-3 victory over the Capitals in Pittsburgh.
Starting in place of Tristan Jarry, who allowed a total of seven goals in the Penguins’ first two games, Pittsburgh goalie Casey DeSmith turned aside 20 shots he faced in regulation and overtime. He then stuffed T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Ovechkin in the shootout.
Ovechkin did score his 707th career goal in the first period to move one shy of Hall of Famer Mike Gartner for seventh on the all-time list.
“It’s the third game, you know, after months of time off without hockey,” Ovechkin said. “It’s the third game and we played against a really good team. … Have to kind of wake up and know exactly what you have to do.”
Panthers 5, Blackhawks 2: Keith Yandle scored his 100th career goal and host Florida won its season opener.
The Panthers were to have played Dallas twice last week, but the games were called off because of a coronavirus outbreak among the Stars.
Florida, which built a 2-0 lead, saw Chicago tie the score early in the third period on Connor Murphy’s wrist shot. But the Panthers regained the lead on Eetu Luostarinen’s goal 22 seconds later.
The Blackhawks (0-3) have allowed five goals in each of their three games.
