NANCY Pelosi could force Mike Pence to decide whether to remove Donald Trump before he is “impeached by Democrats” today.
Pelosi said the House will demand that the Vice President revoke the 25th Amendment and strip Trump of his presidential authority.
In a letter to colleagues last night, Pelosi described Trump as an “urgent threat to the nation.”
If Pence, who has been given 24 hours to respond, doesn’t give his support, the House will vote on the resolution on Tuesday.
“In protecting our Constitution and our democracy, we will act with urgency, because this president represents an imminent threat to both,” she told fellow Democrats in a letter Sunday night.
“As the days go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this president is intensified, and so is the immediate need for action.”
Trump is due to leave office on January 20, which is the reason behind Pelosi stressing the urgency of the matter.
For many lawmakers, mainly Democrats, the prospect of booting the president from the White House and attempting to bar him for holding office again was an attractive one.
More than 200 lawmakers are expected to be co-sponsors of the impeachment resolution, and a passage in the House seems likely.
“We will take the vote that we should take in the House, and [Mrs. Pelosi] will make the determination as to when is the best time to get that vote and get the managers appointed and move that legislation over to the Senate,” Mr. Clyburn said.
“Let’s give President-elect Biden the 100 days he needs to get his agenda off and running, and maybe we will send the articles sometime after that.”
When was Trump impeached?
President Donald Trump become the third US president in history to be impeached by the House of Representatives.
On December 18, 2019, the House of Representatives passed two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump.
Impeachment is one of the few ways a sitting president can be ousted from the White House before an election.
On February 5, 2020, Democratic senators failed to get the necessary two-thirds majority to convict the Trump for either abusing his power or obstructing Congress.
The Senate acquitted Trump in February 2020 after the Democratic-controlled House’s impeachment trial on charges of trying to pressure Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
Trump faced unproven allegations that he threatened to withhold military aid to Ukraine unless the country launched an investigation into Biden’s son.
Conviction on impeachment articles will need a two-thirds vote in the Senate – no president has ever been convicted by the Senate before.
If Trump was convicted, he would be removed from office, but a two-thirds vote in the Senate, even if delayed for 100 days, would still bar the president from holding office again.
During an interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, Pelosi said she would prefer to ouster Trump under the 25th Amendment.
Before the attack on the Capitol last week, Trump hinted towards plans to attempt to run again in 2024.
Pelosi said: “I like the 25th Amendment because it gets rid of him, he’s out of office.
“But there is strong support in the Congress for impeaching the president a second time.”
In her letter on Sunday she said some Democrats want to trigger the 14th Amendment’s bar to holding office for anyone who “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion” or “given aid of comfort” to the enemy.
Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat and the District of Columbia’s nonvoting member of Congress, said Sunday that she will write a resolution censuring Mr. Trump. She said that is the only punishment Congress can pass while he is still in office.
Congress could adopt the censure resolution in the president’s final hours, when the Senate returns.

Democrats’ demands for Trump to leave the White House is met by the Republicans’ division.
Several have said they would support a second impeachment, but others have said that won’t happen in the next 10 days, but that Trump should resign.
Pelosi has always had an anti-Trump agenda and most recently dubbed the president as “deranged and unhinged.”
When Biden was called the president-elect by news outlets on November 7, Pelosi said that Americans decided on a “fairer, stronger” United States by electing the 78-year-old politician.
Republican Rep Ken Buck, along with six other GOP House members, wrote a letter to Biden in hopes he could put a stop to Pelosi’s impeachment efforts.

The letter, which Buck shared to Twitter, reads: “A second impeachment, only days before President Trump will leave office, is as unnecessary as it is inflammatory.
“This impeachment would undermine our priority of unifying Americans and would be a further distraction to our nation at a time when millions of our fellow citizens are hurting because of the pandemic and economic fallout.”
