La Verne plans virtual and modified holiday events
Although the coronavirus pandemic has impacted many celebrations, the city of La Verne plans tocontinue its holiday traditions in virtual and modified forms and is introducing some new holiday events.
The city’s Christmas tree lighting will be a virtual event this year, before the City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7.
The city will hold its first-ever holiday coloring contest, with children ages 3 to 12 invited to color and add personal touches to a coloring sheet available at the Community Services Department in City Hall. Decorated coloring sheets may be dropped off at the Community Services Department in City Hall during operating hours or via the Community Services drop box. Submission are due De. 7, and winners will be notified soon after that, according to a news release.
La Verne residents are invited to enter the city’s virtual holiday home decorating contest by taking up to three photos of their festive home decorations and submitting them through the city’s website, cityoflaverne.org.
Residents are also encouraged to enter the city’s ugly sweater contest, which has five categories, pets, tots (up to age 3), children (ages 4-12), adults (13 and older) and family or group. One photo per entry may be submitted at cityoflaverne.org.
Deadline for the home decorating and ugly sweater contests is Dec. 16.
The city will hold a modified Winter Wonderland drive-through event 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, in the City Hall parking lot. Participants will receive treats, crafts and a Christmas morning goodie bag, and the Community Center, Police Department, City Council, Fire Department and La Verne Preschool staff will be joined by Santa Claus.
The event is free, but registration is required. Sign-ups are available at the Community Services Department in City Hall.
The holiday season will wrap up with Santa making his annual trip through the neighborhoods of La Verne beginning at 7 a.m. on Christmas Day. Because candy bags will not be distributed this year, Santa will travel with a smaller-than-usual crew, with only a lead car announcing his arrival.
