It is a complete joke. Club 12 should have had the same time to build a squad and the same financial package as everyone else. Otherwise it is just purely self interest and greed from the SL clubs. That’s why I think we will be parachuted in to make the TV deal more ‘attractive’ with the return of the Leeds derby, return of the rivalries with Wigan/Saints and the more recent ‘rivalries’ with Wakefield/Hull KR etc. Hopefully SKY then give the same TV package as the previous one.
However if the reports are to be believed the SKY package will be reduced anyway. It’s just a matter of by how much. Regardless of who Club 12 is, I feel sorry for them. And I feel for the Championship/League 1 clubs if the SKY package is lower as they will be the ones who will miss out and you can probably say goodbye to some clubs. So yes you are right, no long term strategy and no thinking forward.
If SKY do have the rights to Champ/League 1 in the new TV deal, but the deal is less (on the SL’s sliding scale) enough to not give the Champ/L1 clubs any money then I can see them going through the courts. Only way they wouldn’t is if SKY offer a lower deal than the current £40million but only take on the SL. In which case the Championship/L1 clubs/RFL should look at BT or other TV services.
Club 12 will likely benefit from a serious number of loanees for the first season. that way the top six get chance to offload quite a large chunk of the wage bill. Without crowds, clubs swill not want to hold on to squads of 405 first team players, 25 reserves and a full women's and junior set up. It is not sustainable.
