BLOG: Longhorns last-second FG fails as Iowa State rallies for 23-20 win

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- When No. 20 Texas hosts No. 15 Iowa State on Friday morning at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium, both sides know what’s at stake. The winner is in position to play for the Big 12 conference championship and the loser will be on the outside looking in.

The Longhorns will not be playing in the Big 12 Championship game as Iowa State rallied for a 23-20 win Friday at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. Cameron Dicker missed a 57-yard field goal as time expired going just wide of the left upright.

Iowa State's Breece Hall scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:30 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Before Friday's Longhorns game against Iowa State, UT Athletics unveiled a statue honoring the football program’s first Black letterman, Julius Whittier.

The 12.5-foot statue now stands in the north end of Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium and commemorates the legacy of Whittier, a Texas Athletics Hall of Honor member and a national champion with the Longhorns in 1970.

Iowa State won the toss and deferred the option to the second half. The Longhorns will start on offense.

Longhorns 1st drive, 1st quarter

What happened: The Longhorns are feeding freshman running back Bijan Robinson early. Texas opened the game with three straight carries to Robinson for 12 yards. On the fourth play, Sam Ehlinger took a shot deep, connecting with Brennan Eagles for 59 yards down to the ISU 4-yard line. The Cyclones held at the goal line after Robinson carried the ball down to the one. He was stopped for a two-yard loss on second down and an attempted swing pass to Robinson in the flat fell incomplete on third down. Cameron Dicker came on for the 20-yard field goal for a 3-0 Texas lead.

Score: Texas leads 3-0

Iowa State 1st drive, 1st quarter

What happened: Perfect series for the Texas defense. The Longhorns stopped talented running back Breece Hall for a loss on first down and forced an incompletion on second down. On third down, Joseph Ossai put pressure on Brock Purdy forcing a short completion and a punt from the Cyclones offense.

Longhorns 2nd drive, 1st quarter

What happened: Texas went back to Robinson on the second drive. Robinson picked up 28 yards on four carries. In the first two series, Robinson has nine carries for 41 yards. Ehlinger found Brennan Eagles for another big play -- an 18-yard gain. Ehlinger followed a path of offensive linemen on an 18-yard touchdown run, giving the Longhorns a 10-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game.

Score: Texas leads 10-0

Iowa State 2nd drive, 1st quarter

What happened: A busted protection on a corner blitz and ISU's Brock Purdy didn't miss the throw to Sean Shaw Jr. for a 35-yard touchdown as the Cyclones enter the game. Iowa State went 75 yards on six plays for the score. The drive was boosted by a personal foul penalty on Texas' Jacoby Jones, but Iowa State's offense had a good script for the score.

Score: Texas leads 10-7

Longhorns 3rd drive, 1st quarter

What happened: The first turnover of the game goes to Iowa State. Sam Ehlinger made a great throw in the middle of the field to Tarik Black, but Isheem Young hit Black at the right spot on the hands to force a fumble. Iowa State recovered at their own 17-yard line. The Longhorns had a good drive going before the turnover.

Iowa State 3rd drive, 1st quarter

What happened: Good response from the Longhorns defense after the turnover. DeMarvion Overshown broke up the pass to Charlie Kolar on third-and-4 to force the ISU punt.

Longhorns 4th drive, 1st quarter

What happened: The Longhorns were set up in good field position after a short Iowa State punt. A pass interference penalty on ISU took the Longhorns into Cyclones territory. Ehlinger ran for 12 yards for another first down at the ISU 29-yard line, but that's where the drive stalled. Cameron Dicker's initial 47-yard field goal attempt was no good, hitting off the upright. An illegal formation penalty on the Cyclones gave Dicker another shot. The Lake Travis product made good on his second attempt from 42 yards.

Score: Texas leads 13-7

End of 1st quarter: Longhorns outgained Iowa State 210-69

Iowa State 4th drive, 2nd quarter

What happened: Iowa State battered and bruised its way down the field for the longest drive of the game, but the Texas defense held the Cyclones out of the end zone. It was an eight minute drive for Iowa State as Breece Hall and Brock Purdy found a good rhythm to the Texas five-yard line. On second-and-goal, a false start penalty pushed Iowa State off schedule back to the seven-yard line. The Longhorns brought the blitz on third down and Josh Thompson had good coverage on Chase Allen to force the Connor Assalley 26-yard field goal.

Score: Texas leads 13-7

Longhorns 5th drive, 2nd quarter

What happened: The Longhorns picked up a first down, but couldn't sustain a drive with less than four minutes to go in the second quarter. Texas is working in dangerous territory nearing halftime. Iowa State will have an opportunity to get back-to-back possessions after winning the coin toss and opting to receive the ball in the second half.

Iowa State 5th drive, 2nd quarter

What happened: Iowa State was set on playing for the final drive of the first half. The Cyclones got into short yardage situations on two third downs to keep the chains moving as the clock ticked down to less than a minute. Iowa State drove the ball to the Texas 23-yard line. Some credit should go to the Longhorns secondary...Jalen Green provided good coverage without committing a penalty on Iowa State's two shots to the end zone in the closing seconds.

Iowa State's Connor Assalley missed a 40-yard field goal as the half expired. Massive stand for the Longhorns, going into the locker room with a 13-10 lead.

Halftime: Texas leads 13-10

Iowa State 6th drive, 3rd quarter

What happened: Joseph Ossai and DeMarvion Overshown stopped a promision Iowa State drive in its tracks, breaking through the offensive line and tackling Kene Nwangwu in the backfield for a loss on third down.

Longhorns 6th drive, 3rd quarter

What happened: Jake Smith flashed on third down, picking up a 17 yard gain for a first down to extend the drive early. Three plays later, Ehlinger completed another deep shot to Brennan Eagles for 47 yards down to the ISU 11. On second down, Jared Wiley caught a six-yard pass in the end zone for a Longhorns touchdown.

Score: Texas leads 20-10

Iowa State 7th drive, 3rd quarter

What happened: Iowa State opened the drive with some tempo gashing the Longhorns secondary for three completions to Charlie Kolar. Kolar picked up 54 yards on the drive. Again, the Longhorns defense held ISU out of the end zone. Keondre Coburn sacked Purdy on third down to force the Assalley field goal. The Longhorns secondary did a good job on the third down play shutting down Purdy's options.

Score: Texas leads 20-13

Longhorns 7th drive, 3rd quarter

What happened: D'Shawn Jamison boosted the Longhorns field position on a kick return to the 50-yard line, but their own special teams mistake gave Iowa State the ball back and momentum. The Cyclones stopped a fake punt attempt, tackling Cade Brewer short of the line to gain on a pass from Cameron Dicker after the offense went three-and-out. ISU starts with the ball at its own 43-yard line.

Iowa State 8th drive, 3rd quarter

What happened: Big play from Purdy to Charlie Kolar for 44 yards put ISU down at the Longhorns 13-yard line. For another series, the Longhorns defense prevented Iowa State from scoring a touchdown. The defensive line put pressure on Purdy forcing three incompletions and an Assalley field goal.

Score: Texas leads 20-16

Longhorns 8th drive, 4th quarter

What happened: The Longhorns converted on two key third downs with Ehlinger as the featured running back. Jake Smith made a great catch on the sideline for 30 yards, pushing Texas to the ISU 19-yard line. The Longhorns wouldn't make another first down on the drive. Ehlinger pushed forward on third and fourth down needing three yards, but the Iowa State defense stopped the senior QB. Turnover on downs. Iowa State will have the ball at the 12-yard line. Interesting decision from the Longhorns coaching staff, going for it when a field goal would've extended the lead to a touchdown. I don't necessarily think it was the wrong decision, but Texas couldn't convert.

Iowa State 9th drive, 4th quarter

What happened: The game clock is at eight minutes. Texas needs a stop to hold onto its 20-16 lead. Iowa State needs 88 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The Cyclones picked up two first downs, but Texas stopped Purdy on third-and-4 to force an Iowa State punt at the 37-yard line.

Longhorns 9th drive, 4th quarter

What happened: Texas has the ball at its 24-yard line with the ability to end the game with a couple first downs. Only 4:04 left on the clock, the Longhorns start with a solid four-yard gain from Bijan Robinson, but Ehlinger's pass attempts fall incomplete on second and third down. Here we go. Texas punts back to Iowa State with 3:09 left in the game.

Iowa State 10th drive, 4th quarter

What happened: Iowa State will start at its own 31-yard line. It took four plays for the Cyclones to go 66 yards. On the fifth play, Breece Hall punches it in from three yards away for Iowa State's first lead of the game. The Cyclones played that drive to perfection while the Texas defense was scrambling for air.

Score: Iowa State leads 23-20

Longhorns 10th drive, 4th quarter

What happened: Potentially, this is Sam Ehlinger's final drive as a Longhorn at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. A holding penalty on first down pushes Texas back even more to 1st-and-20. Jordan Whittington touches the ball for the first time today and picks up a first down on a gain of 12. Ehlinger goes to Roschon Johnson on the next two plays for a gain of 22 yards down to the ISU 43. With 10 seconds to go, Sam Ehlinger made a massive mistake taking a sack at the ISU 40-yard line.

Cameron Dicker set up for a 57-yard field goal. It had the distance but curled away from the upright. It's a miss. Iowa State wins 23-20.

FINAL: Iowa State wins 23-20
