Coach admits PSG cannot afford to sign rumoured Tottenham target
It looks like Tottenham Hotspur have one less competitor to worry about in their rumoured pursuit of Hungarian wonderkind Dominik Szoboszlai after Paris Saint-Germain assistant coach Zsolt Low admitted that the Ligue 1 giants cannot afford to sign the midfielder.
Szoboszlai is one of the most sought after young talents in European football at the moment, with 90min.com reporting that Tottenham face competition from a number of Premier League clubs along with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund for the midfielder’s signature.
BILD (via Sport Witness) also confirmed earlier this week that the RB Salzburg star is on Tottenham’s transfer list for January.
Perhaps one of the reasons so many clubs are after the 20-year-old is because of his modest release clause which stands at little over £20m.
Many clubs could view the opportunity to sign a player of Szoboszlai’s talent for such a low fee as too good to turn down, especially given how cash-strapped many teams are due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, Low admitted that while he would love to see PSG move for Szoboszlai, the French club are not in the financial position to push ahead with the transfer.
Thomas Tuchel’s assistant told Digi Sport (as relayed by Blikk): “I would be the happiest, I will tell you honestly, if I had the opportunity to get Dominik and we could work together.
“We have a very big financial loss, hundreds of millions, which is why we could already see (in the summer) it wasn’t typical for the club to buy players for tens of millions.
“We didn’t have the opportunity to buy big stars. This could make things difficult for Dominik and, if (PSG) decided to fight for him, it would still have to transfer a few tens of millions of euros.
“Perhaps Red Bull Leipzig would be a more healthy move?”
