Video shows teacher slamming student to ground during bathroom argument
Video captured by students at a Florida high school shows a male substitute teacher body-slamming a teenager, reportedly over a bathroom dispute.
WHP-TV reports that the incident took place on Monday at Barbara Goleman Senior High School in Miami Lakes, Florida.
Another student, Danny Echavarria, told the local news station that the teacher had told a male student to wait to use the bathroom due to coronavirus-related restrictions. But after about 30 minutes, the student was done waiting.
The video shows the teacher blocking the classroom door as the student attempts to leave. Both are wearing face masks. The teacher tells him to "go back to your seat." "I don't want to touch you," the teacher says.
But the student persists and pushes past the teacher to open the door. Then, the teacher uses his body to force the student back in. After the student puts his arm around the teacher's neck, the teacher slams him back into a podium and onto the ground.
"Are you serious?" a student says in the background as the video ends.
"The kid just decided to walk out, and the sub tried to stop him, and it just got into like a wrestling match,” Echavarria told WHP-TV. He added that it was "definitely crazy to see in math" class.
In a statement to the Daily Dot, Miami-Dade County Public Schools said a "thorough review" is underway. The substitute teacher had worked in the district for two years without incident.
"The temporary instructor will not be placed at any school pending the outcome of the investigation," the school district's statement said.
