Oxford vaccine volunteers reveal what it’s like to receive Covid jab

Two volunteers who believe they received the AstraZeneca-Oxford Covid vaccine during clinical trials have described the effect it has had on their body.

Earlier this week the University of Oxford said the vaccine had been up to 90% successful in protecting participants against coronavirus, following a trial of 20,000 people in the UK and Brazil. The government has pre-ordered 100 million doses of the jab for when it’s formally approved.

Darren Lipomi, a Department of NanoEngineering professor at the University of California San Diego, is taking part in the US trial of the vaccine and is ‘90% confident’ he didn’t receive a placebo. He told Metro.co.uk he suffered mild joint paint and felt cold for the first 36 hours after receiving the jab.

He went on: ‘It felt like I had a moderately bad cold, but with no respiratory symptoms. But I was still functional throughout that period.

‘I took paracetamol once I officially had a “fever”, and then ibuprofen and unisom (sleeping tablets) before bed. The morning after I felt pretty much fine, with some lingering pain in my joints.’

Researchers in the UK initially said the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine was around 70% effective, but later stated that it was 90% successful among participants who had received a lower amount in the first dose and the full amount in the second.

Trials are now being carried out in the US, Russia, South Africa and South America, with around 60,000 people taking part globally. Volunteers are twice as likely to receive the vaccine than the placebo, and must do a weekly self-check for symptoms and report them using an app.

Prof Lipomi has spent most of the pandemic in his home office, which caused him to miss his PhD mentees, but allowed him to spend more time with his young daughter, one. He believes his vaccine side effects demonstrate that recipients ‘should be in pretty good shape’ after receiving it.

He went on say he was ‘very excited’ by the prospect of a successful vaccine, adding that he’d be likely to accept any of the approved jabs when they become available in the spring or summer.

Dr Emily Cline, a gynaecologist from Greenwood Indiana, received her first injection as part of the trial on November 13. She felt volunteering was the only way she could ‘be a helper’ after being unable to do surgery for her patients amid the height of the pandemic.

The day after her injection she described having ‘significant body aches and a killer headache’, which led her to believe she hadn’t received the placebo. She will receive a second jab on November 29.

She said: ‘The process was very thorough. There was a very lengthy questionnaire that included demographic data, and health history, followed by a medical visit that included a history, and physical examination.

‘They then drew blood to be sent to test for antibodies to Covid-19 and genetic testing. I then had a lovely nasal swab. It felt like pressure, and burning way in the back of my nose, or maybe my brain.

‘She twisted the swab five times, counting all the while. It was so weird. It made my eye water on that side. It was definitely unpleasant, but not as bad as I had feared. Finally, I received the injection, which was actually almost painless.’

Dr Cline said she was ‘hugely encouraged’ by the early successes of the vaccines. She has found it difficult this year not being able to perform her ‘best’ at work and has been unable to see her mum, who has Alzheimer’s and is in an assisted living facility.

She stated that she feels ‘very fortunate’ to still have a job, and said her family would be donating to food banks and ‘people in need’ instead of buying gifts for each other this Christmas.

She said: ‘The fact that there are several vaccines that will likely be beneficial is very encouraging. [Although] I worry that there will be a bottleneck in the distribution, and that people won’t continue with the other measures in the meantime until enough people can be vaccinated.

‘It makes me so sad seeing on the news every day how some people have been so dramatically affected by the virus and are having such a hard time.’
