Gloucester City V Chester FC - Match Thread #17 - Vanarama National Le
We continue our league campaign today as we make the journey to Gloucestershire to take on Gloucester City away in a top-of-the-table clash. Should be a really interesting affair today because Gloucester City haven’t faced any of the stronger sides yet, while we have already defeated a few decent outfits this campaign so it could go either way. I must admit that I’m not entirely confident of us picking up all three points given our unprecedented record on artificial surfaces and what happened last Saturday, but we did bounce back very strongly on Tuesday which puts us in a greater mindset for this afternoon. A draw certainly would be a credible result if we were to get one.
Our last match was on Tuesday night as we won 2-1 at home against Curzon Ashton in what was a superb performance. Our first half display was really encouraging, and the breakthrough came on the approach to half time as Danny Elliott slotted in off the post to make it 1-0 to us. It was a narrow half time lead albeit a deserved one as we were top throughout the first 45. Meanwhile, the second period wasn’t too dissimilar to the first as we kept up our attractive brand of football, despite Curzon Ashton coming into the game more. It was Curzon Ashton who found the equaliser, as Dominic Knowles finished off a great move to make it 1-1. Moments after coming on Matty Hughes almost made an immediate impact, but he was unable to put us back in front as he hit the post. That wasn’t to be an issue though as George Glendon smashed in on the edge of the area to make it 2-1 to us - finishing off a lovely move. Overall, a much-improved display and result from Marine that will give us a bout of confidence ahead of today.
Gloucester City have made a very encouraging start to their new league campaign following a busy and eye-catching Summer in the transfer market. The Tigers have been tipped to be one of the surprise packages alongside Curzon Ashton, having brought in the likes of George Carline, Alex Whittle, our friend Akwasi Asante, and Kevin Dawson who have all significantly strengthened the Gloucestershire side. Glos’ league start has been formidable having won all three matches, although it can be argued that they have only played against the more weaker sides so far, so it will be interesting to see how they fare against ourselves who are amongst the best sides. We will be up against one former Seal this afternoon in Akwasi Asante, who turned out to be one of our best players since our reformation. Striker Akwasi initially joined us on loan from Tamworth in 2018, where after a stunning spell he went on to sign for us on a permanent basis in January of last year. After an outstanding campaign last time out, Asante departed for pastures new as he joined Gloucester City back in June to link up with manager James Rowe, and he has been there ever since.
It is of course my 18th birthday today so three points down in the West Country would be a welcome present. Looking forward to going out to watch it and I wish our players all the very best in what will be a difficult test for them. I’d definitely hand Matty Hughes a start because after a frustrating last few months, he certainly caused Curzon Ashton a nuisance when he came on and if the George Waring situation is true, then Hughesy deserves a start. We do have a tough couple of matches coming up with York City away following this, but the advantage of no spectators needs to be capitalised on as there is virtually a level playing field, so we should be feeling no pressure. Come On You Seals!
Score: Gloucester City (Mensah, Asante) 2-1 Chester FC (Weeks)
Attendance: 0 (0 Chester FC)
My predicted lineup:
Gray
K.Roberts Livesey Grand Taylor
Jackson Glendon Weeks Bauress
Hughes Elliott
