Junto Nakatani takes part in virtual press conference
Next week we'll see the vacant WBO Flyweight title have a new champion crowned as Junto Nakatani (20-0, 15) [中谷 潤人] and Giemel Magramo (24-1, 20) battle for the belt in Tokyo.
Today, ahead of that bout, Nakatani took part in a in an online press conference and spoke about the contest, the frustrations around it and how he is now.
The bout was originally scheduled for April, but was then delayed to August, and then postponed again. In regards to the various delays to the bout Nakatani stated "I was disappointed with the postponement, but I would like to thank many people for their support." [Translated]
Although there was delays, and obviously limitations in what he's been able to do in regards to training, he has revealed that he has been working on things. Explaining "I've been able to improve my image of making long distances, and I've been practicing to push back the opponent even at short distances, which I was not good at. I'm confident and mentally growing I think it's done". [Translated]
It was also revealed that he had been sparring with former WBC Flyweight champion Daigo Higa (16-1-1, 16) [比嘉 大吾] and current WBC Light Flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji (17-0, 10) [寺地 拳四朗]. Interestingly the sparring with Kenshiro was particularly notable as the Amazing Boy had previously sparred with Magramo.
Prior to the world becoming what it was, Nakatani had been in the US for a long term training came in Los Angeles under the guidance of Rudy Hernandez. Sadly that camp was cancelled part way through. Despite that Nakatani has admitted being in contact with Mr Hernandez for guidance, using Facebook to contact the legendary trainer.
It was revealed that Nakatani has sparred close to 500 rounds since February, but his hunger still seems to be there, and before the press conference was over he stated "It's been a little over 10 years since I wanted to become a world champion in boxing. I will definitely be a world champion on November 6th." [Translated]
