‘In my house, we were all big fans’ – Spurs’ summer signing admits big reason for move
Sergio Reguilon has admitted that he and his family have always been big fans of Jose Mourinho and that it is a dream come true for him to now work with the Portuguese coach at Tottenham.
Mourinho spent three years in the Real Madrid hot seat, guiding them to a La Liga title in 2011/12, beating out what was arguably one of the greatest Barcelona sides of all-time, as well as winning Copa Del Rey and a Spanish Supercup.
Speaking about his memories of Mourinho at Real Madrid, Reguilon told Sky Sports: “I was very young, still a cadet in the academy, and I never had the good fortune of meeting him.
“In my house, we were all big fans of Mourinho. He is a world-class manager and he was very important in my decision to come.”
The left-back was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United before the Lilywhites swooped for him, and it certainly looks like he is happy with his decision to come to Spurs.
“There was a broad market but as soon as I heard of Tottenham’s interest, it was simple,” he says. “It was a big deal to leave my country, my league and my family, but it has worked out well.
“Since I arrived here, the truth is the club has surprised me in a very good way. The training facilities, my team-mates, everything. The stadium is insane. I have really enjoyed it so far.”
The Spain international’s arrival was announced on the same day as the capture of Gareth Bale.
His signing was overshadowed to an extent by the return of the Welsh superstar, although the 23-year-old has proven already that he can be just as influential for Spurs in the long-term if not more.
Reguilon admitted that he spoke to Bale about Spurs when he heard of the North Londoner’s interest.
He added: “I spoke with Bale when I was in Madri. He told me what it was like at Tottenham. It was helpful for me to come here with someone who was already a team-mate.
“I could ask him things, like how certain things were going to work. The truth is he helped me a lot and so have the others.”
