Fire hospitalizes 1, causes $125K in damage to Topeka apartment complex
TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) - A fire hospitalized one person and caused more than $100,000 in damage Thursday morning in Topeka's Whitehall Apartments.
Firefighters went to the complex near I-470 and Southwest Gage Boulevard around 2:30 a.m., according to a Shawnee County dispatcher. One person refused to leave their apartment as firefighters worked on the fire.
Crews on scene said they put out the fire within the hour, and coaxed the person staying inside to come out. A hotspot flared back up around 5:30 a.m., but crews were able to put it out. They are working through the affected building to check for residual fires.
The fire hospitalized one person, whose apartment investigators said the fire started in. Their injuries are not life-threatening, but there is no word on the victim's current condition.
Topeka Fire believe the fire started in the kitchen of a second floor apartment.
However, investigators said they could not figure out what caused the apartment complex fire as of Thursday morning, but estimate the fire caused around $125,000 in damage.
This is the third fire Topeka has seen in two days. A home near Southwest 24th Terrace and Westport Drive caught fire Wednesday morning, and firefighters investigated a burned garage in the afternoon.
