Small new ‘iPhone Mini’ leaked – as experts warn new iPhone 12 will cost £100 more than current model

APPLE is working on a “mini” version of its new iPhone, according to reports.

The palm-sized mobile is one of four iPhones rumoured for launch this month, possibly as early as October 13.

Boasting a display measuring just 5.4in, the compact contraption is said to be Apple’s smallest mobile in three years.

Whispers of the iPhone Mini have gathered pace in recent months, and now a trusted Apple leaker appears to have confirmed it existence.

Jon Prosser, who regularly shares details of Apple devices before they launch, tweeted that the handset is being shipped to shops this week.

“Apple’s first shipment of final iPhone 12 units is going out to distributers on October 5th,” the YouTuber wrote on Tuesday.

“The shipment includes the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12. Event on October 13, as I mentioned before.”

Apple typically unveils its new iPhones during its annual September hardware event and releases them by the end of the month, but this year is doing things a little differently.

Apple exec Luca Maestri confirmed in July that, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the new iPhones would be pushed back by “a few weeks”.

In total, four iPhones are expected to feature: A 6.1in base iPhone 12, a 6.1in iPhone 12 Pro, a 6.7in iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the Mini.

It’s believed that Apple will release the base iPhone 12 and the Mini by the end of October, while the Pro and Pro Max models will ship in November.

According to Prosser, shipments of the first two iPhones are already on their way to distributors.

Apple fans will have the option to bag the Mini and base iPhone 12 with 64, 128 or 256GB of internal storage.

It’s not entirely clear where the Arkansas native got his information, so take it with a pinch of salt for now.

iPhone tricks to try today

Here are some of the best...

  • Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the space bar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, letting you move around words and sentences more easily
  • Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapped squares in the bottom right-hand corner, and press close all tabs
  • Delete lots of photos quickly – Hold down on a photo and then drag your finger diagonally in Photos to select lots of images at once, then hit delete
  • Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of your Home screen (or swipe left to right on an iPhone X or later model), then tap in the bar and type a currency (like $200) and it will automatically covert to your local currency
  • Check if you’re due a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health, and check out the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally a battery is considered worn when you’re down to 80% capacity. If you’re below, you can buy a battery swap from Apple
  • Move apps around faster – Hold an app until it starts wiggling, then (while still holding) tap other apps, causing them to stack so you can move them around easier

We already know a fair bit about the 2020 iPhones due to various leaks and rumours.

Recent reports have suggested that all four rumoured variants will come with 5G connectivity.

According to analysts, the mini will cost as little as $700 (£560), while the 6.1in base and Pro models will come in at $799 (£620) and $999 (£800) respectively. The largest of the bunch, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, will cost $1,099 (£890).

Those rumoured price tags would put the base iPhone 12 at $100 more than the iPhone 11, the bog standard Apple mobile released last year.

In other news, the iPhone 12 could be the first Apple mobile that ships without headphones or a charging plug in the box.

Facebook is rolling out a new feature that further attempts to merge it with Instagram.

And, a new update will give Apple users 117 new emoji on their iPhones.
