Palm Springs’ Modernism Week Preview is going virtual
If you’re a cool cat, a hip daddio or simply a lover of Neutra and Wexler architecture, here’s some happy news. Palm Springs, that mecca of midcentury modern everything, is taking its Modernism Week Preview virtual on Oct. 16.
Normally, previews are a mere peek. But the October preview is an event in its own right, typically offering four days of splashy events and architecture tours that can be enjoyed on their own, or as a preview for the 11-day Modernism Week extravaganza held each February. (The most recent February bash drew some 165,00 visitors to its 375-plus home tours, film screenings, parties and shindigs.)
Now the Modernism Week Preview is taking its attractions to the ether so you can enjoy the fun from home. Take a driving tour of “Palm Springsland” ($35) with midcentury pop culture expert Charles Phoenix, who does Modernism Week’s ever-popular double-decker bus tours. Or join host Kellee McQuinn and DJ Baz for a “Live from the Zoom Zoom Room” virtual happy hour ($5) that includes architecture trivia, modernism mixology and tunes from the midcentury era.
Tickets go on sale at noon on Oct. 15 at modernismweek.com. Video events will be accessible for online viewing for 30 days after purchase. But you’ll want to be on time for that virtual happy hour. Its interactive, real time fun starts at 6 p.m. Oct. 16.
