Britain’s first gender fluid family hits milestone as biological dad has sex change operation to become mum

BRITAIN’S first gender fluid family has reached another milestone – after biological dad Louise Draven underwent a sex change op to become mum.

And birth mum Charlie Draven, 33, also hopes to undergo gender reassignment surgery to become their seven-year-old son Star’s dad.

Star already calls Louise ‘Mummy’ and Charlie ‘Daddy’ but the couple, who wed in 2012, were desperate to fully transition to complete their family.

The couple hit the headlines three years ago when they revealed they were going to let their son decide his gender when he is older.

In 2018 they both announced they were planning to transition before Star turns 10.

Stay-at-home mum Louise, 34, was ready for the op in March but the Covid-19 lockdown saw it cancelled at the last minute.

Louise, of Middlesbrough, said: “That was the second time the op had been cancelled and the stress and disappointment were unbearable.

“Because of the lockdown, all operations were off and I also wasn’t getting the support I needed from mental health services.”

She finally went in for the private op in August.

‘SAYING GOODBYE TO AN OLD FRIEND’

Louise added: “I was so excited to finally be there, I didn’t think to be worried.

“I had every confidence in the surgeon and – I know it sounds crazy – but I just couldn’t wait to go under the knife.

“It’s as if a big weight has been lifted and a massive part of my gender dysphoria has gone.

“I feel stronger, more confident and my whole world feels right.

“With gender dysphoria, no matter how much therapy you have, it won’t change how you see yourself: it’s actually the physical self that matters the most.

“That part of me has served its purpose by allowing me to have a child. But I didn’t need it any more.

“In a way, it’s like saying goodbye to an old friend you’ve grown apart from: we had our ups and downs but now it’s time to move on.

“Now it’s done, I have no regrets whatsoever. I’ve been waiting a long time for this and I couldn’t be happier.”

Charlie said they told Star of the op.

He said: “We have very open and honest conversations with Star and we explained to him that Mummy was going into hospital so she could get her body to match her brain.

“We didn’t go into any kind of detail – that would have been inappropriate – but he knows that Mummy had her ‘duckie’ taken away and that she now has a ‘foo’ instead.

“We explained that by doing this, Mummy would be a lot happier and he said ‘well, if Mummy’s happy, so am I’.

Charlie, who has lived as a man for 26 months, faces an agonising two year wait before he receives any kind of medical or surgical treatment.

He said: “It’s a long road ahead as I need to lose weight via bariatric surgery, get properly physically and psychologically assessed and hopefully be approved for hormones.

“Only then will the docs consider surgery. Ideally, I’d like to be fully transitioned before I’m 40.”

‘WE HAVE AN AMAZING SON’

And despite a previous love for the colour pink and long hair Star has made it clear he identifies as a boy.

Louise says: “He’s a bright, articulate, headstrong and very kind child and is very definitely male.

“Charlie and I didn’t encourage or discourage Star to be ‘normal’ – he just
started veering towards boys’ toys, football and getting a haircut.

“We’re really proud of him. He’s his own little man.”

The couple reckon the chances of him becoming trans when he is older are “highly unlikely”.

Ex-pub bouncer Charlie said: “Star knows what he wants and if he’d wanted to be a girl, he’d have made that clear.

“He’s happy to identify as a boy and we’re happy we have such a clever, contented and amazing son.

“Star has always been aware that not all families are the same and has grown up in a very diverse environment.

“He knows that it’s not just mummies who give birth but that some daddies can too.”
