Victim of elevator accident was a French instructor at BU

BOSTON (AP) — A woman killed in an elevator accident at a Boston apartment building earlier this week has been identified as a French lecturer at Boston University.

Carrie O’Connor, 38, died of traumatic asphyxia and the manner was determined to be accidental, police said Tuesday.

Neighbors say O'Connor was trying to move a box on Monday evening when the elevator in the building in the city's Allston neighborhood malfunctioned. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second person was taken to the hospital suffering from shock, but was not physically hurt, police said. That person's name was not released.

The Division of Professional Licensure in the state Office of Public Safety and Inspections released a statement Tuesday saying the elevator had been recently inspected without providing a precise date.

O’Connor joined Boston University's Romance Studies Department last year, after stints at a handful of other colleges including Bentley, MIT, Northeastern and Tufts, according to her school profile.

The death remains under investigation.
