An eight year-old boy almost killed himself after he accidentally hanged himself from the roof of his mother’s car with one of its seat belts. Brayden Sherbovich passed out after tangling the middle seat belt in the back seat of his mom’s car around his neck. Its locking device then engaged, depriving him of oxygen.

Brayden’s mother Siobhan, from Bedford in Massachusetts, was driving her family home from an ice cream shop on Saturday when the freak accident happened. She recalled: ‘He just said, “Mom, I can’t breathe. I’m stuck.”

‘Before I could even process anything he was basically hanging from the ceiling. Uncut, just unconscious. (He was) blue as can be. There was blood coming out from the pressure, and I looked. He was gone.’

Siobhan desperately tried to free Brayden, but was unable to do so. She then saw a beauty salon out of the corner of her eye, and ran towards it screaming for help.

Speaking to WCVB, Siobhan continued: ‘ This wonderful, terrified woman comes out and gives me scissors and I run back.

‘I cut him loose from the top of the ceiling, and he falls out of the car, just completely unconscious. And within what felt like an hour, an eternity, he just went “What happened? I’m okay.”‘

Police and fire crews arrived on the scene, and Brayden was taken to hospital for an evaluation.

He survived the ordeal without coming to any physical harm, but his mom was left badly shaken, and has urged parents to keep a seat belt cutter in their cars.

A local police chief investigating the incident says its the first time he’s heard of someone almost being strangled by a seat belt in his 25 year career.
