A black man known for holding pro-Trump signs as shot dead outside his office and investigators are now looking into whether the killing was politically motivated.
Bernell Trammell, 60, was gunned down in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Thursday. The murder has since sparked outrage as Trammell was a well-known character in his community known for vocally supporter causes such as the Black Lives Matter movement and Donald Trump’s reelection campaign.
The Milwaukee Police Department has released limited information about the shooting other than that it happened shortly after noon on the 900 block of East Wright Street.
Reggie Moore, director of Milwaukee’s Office of Violence Prevention, told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he recently mediated a dispute between Trammell and a young man. Moore said he believes the incident was related to a Trump sign that Trammell had been carrying.
‘He’s a black elder who didn’t deserve to die the way he did,’ Moore said, adding that the way Moore was gunned down ‘in front of his home and in front of his shop in broad daylight, is extremely troubling.’
The killing has sparked claims from Republican leaders that Trammell was murdered for his political beliefs.
Chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, Andrew HIlt, urged federal investigators to look into the murder due to its perceived political nature.
‘Because of Trammell’s well known political activism and the possibility that his murder could be politically motivated, I respectfully request that United States Attorney Matthew Krueger open an investigation into this heinous crime,’ Hilt said in a statement.
‘No American should fear for their personal safety because of where they live or their political affiliation.’
Police are reportedly still searching for the person responsible for killing Trammell.
A memorial with plants and chalk art has been placed outside the eXpressions Journal office, where Trammell worked and was killed.
