Dickiedooda gives thrill to Barnett and Rosemont

Former Victoria Racing Club vice chairman and breeder Peter Barnett scored some Listed success in Ireland on Sunday with a two year-old filly by shuttle stallion, Starspangledbanner.
Barnett, who has interests in several horses in Victoria has joined a syndicate in Ireland – Alpha Racing – and is having plenty of success.
The unusually named Starspangledbanner filly, Dickiedooda, won the Listed Tipperary Stakes at Cork.
Barnett became involved in the syndicate at the suggestion of his wife, Elaine “Legs” Lawlor who formed the first female-only syndicate, It’s All About the Girls in Australia.
It’s All About the Girls syndicate of about 40 ladies from seven countries bought the filly Global Glamour at the 2015 Magic Million yearling sale for $65,000. Global Glamour went on to win just more than $1.5 million as a dual Group 1 winner.
Barnett has had enormous success with the past two syndicate runners – Dickiedooda and Cadillac.
Jessica Harrington trains for the syndicate.
“Legs, together with Jessica Harrington and a bloodstock agent, Patrick Cooper from BBA Ireland. A couple of years ago Patrick said to Legs and Jessie why don’t we put together a syndicate,” Barnett said.
“Syndicates aren’t big in Ireland like they are in Australia, but it stemmed from Legs’ success with the girls in Global Glamour.
“Patrick has got a pretty keen eye and he doesn’t overspend. We bought nine yearlings and I think the most expensive was 100,000 euros and we sold one to America for 250,000 euros,” he said.
“We did the same thing last year and Dickiedooda was one of them. I think she cost around 30,000 guineas and we have another six to come out.
“We have had three two year-old runners this season and for now three wins and a second and an unplaced runner at Royal Ascot.
“Dickiedooda has obviously got talent and there is a Lope de Vega colt we had 10 days ago that came out for his first start and won by nine lengths.
“He is called Cadillac. It’s a lot fun.”
Barnett said most of the yearlings are bought cheaply by the astute Cooper who paid 42,000 euros for Cadillac at Goffs.
“I was reading an article on the weekend and they were talking about world ratings for two year-olds and they have got Cadillac in the first half dozen after one start.
“But the next couple of starts will tell the tale of just how good he is. He won at Leopardstown over seven furlongs (1400m) and he was in behind two horses with about a furlong to go. The jockey pulled him back to the outside and that was the end of the race. His turn of foot was just phenomenal.
“We have already had offers, but everyone is happy to roll the dice with him and see how good he is. We all live the dream that he could be anything.”
Barnett said the Dickiedooda’s victory was good for Starspangledbanner and Rosemont Stud where he stands in Victoria after finishing his Irish stud duties.
Barnett said there were 18 people in the Alpha Racing syndicate – from America, England, Ireland and Australia that bought the yearlings and now race them.
And if you’re wondering about the name, Barnett laughs, when he explains that “Legs” thought she was getting doo dah day from the song of the same name.
“And we finished with Dickiedooda,” he said.
“It’s a good, fun name.”
Barnett joined the VRC in 1999 and was vice president from 2003 to 2009. Under the club’s rules office bearers must relinquish their position when they reach 68 years-old.
“I stepped off the board in 2010,” he said.
Barnett said he has several horses currently racing in Victoria.
“I have been in the Highclere syndicate for about 15 years and we have got Lord Belvedere (two wins at Flemington from his past two starts) running around at the moment,” he said.
“I have got a few with Chris Waller, a couple of rising two year-olds with Team Hawkes and a few two year-olds with Anthony Freedman.”
Barnett said Dickiedooda’s win was good for Starspangledbanner who he described as a good sire who offered excellent value at a service fee of $19,800.
